"Sounding" Cherry Wood 12" x 12" x 36" - Was the first piece I did once I started getting back into art. I had been playing around sculpting some fish hanging from wires. So I must have had fins on my brain when I made these small clay models based on organic forms. For this piece, I had the gesture, which had some movement to it, but I didn't want it to be an obvious fish tale. I wanted to show similarity in nature and tried to have it work in a 360-degree way. I had received a nice cherry log to work on, so I started in on it with the chainsaw using the little model as a guide. I never measured; I tried to use the force… :) I was disappointed to have it check badly. I had enclosed the center of the log, and that did it. I still entered it into the Newburyport Art Ass. Juried show because the check didn’t bother me visually. It checked in a way that looked like a feather would split. I was also trying to accept imperfection and would include defects. Anyway, I was glad I did because I won first place for sculpture.
